In academic mode, grades are weighted. Rubrics have criteria and levels. Attendance has a history and excused absences. Assignments get submitted, marked, and returned. Discussions get graded. This is the ordinary machinery of teaching, and most modern platforms simply don’t have it.
What’s in academic mode
Build a rubric with criteria and performance levels, attach it to an assignment, and grade against it. Students see the rubric before they submit—which is the whole point of a rubric. Scores flow straight into the gradebook.
Of the seven platforms we’re regularly compared to, one has partial rubric support. The rest have none.
Categories with weights—exams 40%, assignments 30%, participation 15%, and so on. Real running grades that mean something, not a completion percentage dressed up as a score.
Students submit files. Instructors mark them, leave feedback, and return them. Due dates, late handling, and resubmission.
Build a bank, draw randomly per student, and stop the answer key from circulating by lunchtime on the first day.
A real attendance register with a record over time and a distinction between absent and excused—the thing every registrar asks for and almost no course platform tracks.
Students review each other’s work inside the platform, structured and gradable. We haven’t found another platform on our comparison list that offers it at all.

Your site runs on our servers, on your domain, with your branding. No server to provision, no upgrade to schedule, no security patch that becomes somebody’s weekend. For departments who’ve been quoted an LMS installation and a systems administrator to go with it, this is usually the deciding factor.
